Operatives preparing contaminated soil for safe disposal

Asbestos Removal and Land Decontamination at a Brownfield Site

Hunter Demolition was awarded the contract to decontaminate a vacant industrial site to enable it to be re-developed as a location for new housing.

Our client, Persimmon Homes, had bought the site at Uphall, near Edinburgh, which had previously contained a factory complex. When the buildings were demolished by another contractor, asbestos had been left on site and within the ground.

The site measured some 9 hectares and the factory buildings had contained asbestos cement in their construction. Not only was the site contaminated with this, but heating pipes with asbestos pipe insulation had been left in the ground.

Our asbestos removal operatives excavated the contaminated soil, wetted it and placed it in polythene lined trucks which were then happed over and taken to a licensed landfill facility for safe disposal. Throughout the process, our on-site chemist carried out perimeter air testing to ensure that the work was carried out well within the demands of asbestos removal and disposal legislation.

With our work complete, our client then began their work of transforming the eyesore, brownfield site into a new housing estate, safe in the knowledge that nothing hazardous remained on or in the ground.
