Muir Construction commissioned Hunter Demolition to demolish the former OKI electronic printer manufacturing plant at Cumbernauld prior to their construction of a new retail park.
This was a large 15 hectare site comprising conjoined reinforced concrete frame, steel frame and brick buildings, together with a five storey office tower block, roads, car parking and storage areas.
It was one of our commissions where we have had to work with a team of archaeologists. Here, investigations were being carried out into part of a Roman camp which lay beneath the eastern end of the site. We had deep foundations to deal with so it was vital that we worked carefully in association with the archaeologists.
What is more, the site is also adjacent to Cumbernauld airport so we had to ensure that all dust arising from the work was rigorously controlled.
Prior to the demolition work, our Asbestos Removal Division removed and disposed of the large amounts of asbestos which our survey had revealed in the site. Then, following demolition, all material crushed on site was re-used in the construction of the Westway Retail Park.
As for the remains of the Roman camp, they lie protected beneath the site – and, who knows, perhaps one day they will once again provide a challenge for a future generation of the Hunter Demolition team!
