Demolition of a heavy engineering works in Motherwell

Demolition and Ground Remediation at a
Heavy Engineering Works

Hunter Demolition was commissioned by MB Engineering Solutions to complete demolition on a site in Motherwell which had been partially demolished in the past by other contractors.

There remained on this site two large steel framed buildings some 12,000 square metres in area, together with a four-storey office block.

We removed and disposed of the asbestos in these remaining buildings and worked with our client’s team to dismantle and remove some large transformers for re-use elsewhere.

The 18 metre high industrial buildings were adjacent to the main West Coast railway line so it was imperative that our demolition schedule was planned to ensure that possessions and isolations negotiated with Network Rail were kept to a minimum. The demolition was carried out at night in two phases, during which times the railway was closed.

Once demolition was complete, 4,000 tonnes of steelwork were removed from site for recycling, and concrete and other masonry materials were crushed and screened ready for re-use.

The project also included ground remediation. The earlier piecemeal demolition by other contractors had left asbestos and other contaminants in the ground. We therefore excavated and removed all contaminated soil and rubble from the site, leaving it ready for its new incarnation as a housing development.
